Welcome to our first Member Spotlight! We’d like to introduce you to Karen Groves, a lover of pins and scraps, among other things! Find her on Instagram at @greengroves. Take it away, Karen!
How many years have you been sewing/quilting and how did you get started? I started quilting 11 years ago, when my husband and I moved to a small town in Wyoming. The church ladies there took me under their wing and taught me all the basics I needed to know for making quilts. I made quite a few quilts and tops that year and have been hooked ever since.
How would you define your quilting style? I am definitely a very scrappy quilter. I love to mix fabric lines and different sizes and kinds of blocks. I will also mix different texures and kinds of fabric. I know this breaks the rules of quilting a little bit, but I just love the idea of mixing all kinds of pieces together into a cohesive quilt.
Where do you find inspiration? Most of my inspiration comes from the person who will recieve the quilt. I like to incorporate people’s interests and personalities into the quilts I make. I also find inspiration from the fabric itself. I love to see how different fabrics will work together and go from there. I also like Instagram to see what other quilters of the world are making.
Who are your favorite designers? (fabric or pattern) Bonnie and Camille, Anna Maria Horner, Cotton and Steel, Amy Butler, Kate Spain. I also love to mix new modern fabric with older fabric. I rarely buy new fabric, and when I do, it’s usually only a 1/4 yard of something I really love. Most of my fabric stash has been passed onto to me by other people. I’m very lucky to have lots of generous friends who share their scraps with me. That will keep me sewing for ages.
What are your favorite colors to work with? Pink, orange, yellow, light blue, aqua, and purple. I like bright, happy colors.
What do you like to do outside of sewing/quilting? I have a cute, spunky, two-year old that keeps me busy most of the time. I also like to knit, read, and ride my bike.
Anything else you’d like to share? I think a house filled with quilts is a happy place.
Thank you, Karen!
