A History of the Guild
Our three founding members first connected online and then met for the guild’s inaugural meeting in May of 2010. They met at a local bookstore in Fort Collins called The Book Cove. Later guild meetings in the early days rotated between members’ homes.
Around January of 2012, a more formal schedule was adopted for meetings and sew days. Members also began meeting at Mama Said Sew, a great fabric shop in town. At this point membership was very informal, dues were not collected, and many meetings were a great time to be social with friends. The guild had unofficially voted in one member as “President”, which meant she maintained a roster of members, sent out email reminders of meetings and helped coordinate some guild activities and swaps, including the guild’s first retreat and first Secret Santa Swap. The FCMQG was still fairly small in numbers.
In 2013 the National Modern Quilt Guild announced they were going to formalize membership. Members of the FCMQG discussed the topic and voted to become a guild under the MQG umbrella. Bylaws were written in August of 2013, and officers were elected in October 2013 to serve through December 2014. In August the guild also participated in the Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival for the first time.
2014 saw the FCMQG host two retreats; one in January and one in August. We also participated in the Colorado MQG Challenge, with two of our members making quilts to display around the state. We had a great turnout for a second Rocky Mountain Quilt Festival as well.
There are many exciting things on the horizon for the Fort Collins Modern Quilt Guild! We welcome anyone interested!
